Smartrac, a Dutch RFID company, is reportedly developing a new type of passive RFID tag. The new label is almost completely biodegradable after use, thus achieving environmental protection, which can be called a green label.

Manfred Rietzler, head of technology at Smartrac, said Smartrac is working on the technology with two universities and is also in talks with material suppliers in the United States and Japan, and expects the tags to be used in many new consumer applications, including tickets and consumer packaging.

According to reports, the price of the new tag will be similar to the current non-degradable RFID tag, the first green tag products are expected to be on the market within a year.
